February 8, 2003, M38 Photos
These are some photos that I took on Saturday, February 8, 2203, after I hot wired the jeep and went riding around the yard to check out the operation of the mechanicals. I also wanted to document what the M38 looked like before I got too heavily involved in it's restoration...
If you have questions about any of these photos, send me an email and I'll try to provide an answer.

Photo | Caption |
1-10 | Overall body shots. |
11-12 | The only serious rust on the body. Will fix when the body comes off for paint... |
19-21 | Notice that somebody relocated the rear bumperettes to the outside edges of the vehicle. |
23 | Jerry can holder is tight to the tailgate, if a can is put in the holder, it has to lean way back because of interference with the upper strap bracket... |
24 | Wet spot is penetrating oil that was used to free the bolt holding the inner fender splash panel in place so that I could remove the panel in order to work on the taillight and trailer harness wiring. |
28 | Gas tank does not appear to leak. |
31 | Instrument panel is in the garage, I removed it to replace the spider harness and to change burnt out bulbs. |
32 | Shot of the three circuit breakers. Two of them are later models with the rubber connectors (rotted off). |
36-38 | Shots of the hood markings. Same number on different layers of paint in two locations. Tag on the dash says that the M38's responsible agency was the Marine Corps. Using the serial number list on the M38 Yahoo group, it appears that this hood number is numerically lower than a M38 delivered two months prior to this one... |
39 | Notice that the hand throttle and choke cables are missing, M38 still fires right up on a cold day with just a few shots from the primer. |
40-42 | Military Junior oil filter, I have a CUNO unit in a box that came with the truck. I also appear to have a civilian air cleaner... The battery box is missing and the previous owner just stuffed two batteries on the tray. |
44 | Previous owner rebuilt the gas pump and cleaned up the carb before I picked up the truck. |
45 | Started to rewire the jeep. I have the headlight grommets on order... |
46 | Plug wires installed by previous owner, not stock M38, but they work well (and are military). |
47-49, 51 | Shots of the air cleaner. Works well, but has no provision for the fording kit snorkel... |
50 | Hood hinge. I was given a gutter strip to attach to the hinge bolts to prevent water from pooling on the sparkplugs, but I will wait until I paint the truck to install it. |
58-59 | I removed the taillight in order to repair the internal components... Bumperette is too far outboard... |
60-61 | Rear seat back folded down. |
62-63 | Shots of the spare tire bracket. |
64-65 | Shots of the toolbox. Bottom has a little rust that will get fixed when the body is removed for painting. |
66 | Glovebox |
67-68 | Passenger and driver's side vacuum wiper motors. I put new rubber line on the vacuum line, but the wipers still don't work. I'll take them apart and either get them running or they'll get replaced with new units... |
